What are Story Points

Story points provide a more accurate and reliable way of estimating work, facilitate better communication and collaboration, increase efficiency, improve customer satisfaction, and help with prioritization in the development process.

What are Story Points?

Story points are a unit of measure used to estimate the relative size and complexity of work items in agile software development. They are intended to provide a more accurate and reliable way of estimating work than traditional methods, such as time-based estimation.

Story points are typically assigned using a relative scale, such as the Fibonacci sequence (1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, etc.), which allows team members to assign higher values to larger, more complex work items and lower values to smaller, simpler work items. This allows teams to estimate the relative size and complexity of work items more accurately and consistently.

How do Story Points Work at BS LLC

When a task is requested from BS LLC we will assess the task based on the below criteria.

Story Points

1 2 3 5 8 13
How much Work / Effort Less than 2 hours Half Day Up to Two Days Few Days About a Week More than a week

How much is known about the task?

Everything Almost Everything Something Almost Nothing Nothing Nothing
Dependencies None Almost None Some Few More than a Few Unknown

Once the task is Assessed & Quoted (learn more about our Kanban or Ticketing Process), we will provide a quote in Story Points for the production of your Task.

If a task requires 1 Story Point, you will be billed no more than 2 hours but it could take .5 hours to produce. Similarly, 8 Story Points would require no more than 5 days or 40 hours.

Hours are billed according to our internal rates.

How do Story Points Work at BS LLC

Story points are used by agency-client teams in the following ways:

  1. Improved prioritization: By assigning story points to work items based on their relative size and complexity, an agency can help clients to prioritize work items and understand which items are most important to complete first. This can help clients to allocate their resources more effectively and prioritize their development efforts.

  2. Enhanced flexibility: By using story points to estimate work, an agency can provide clients with more flexibility to adjust their development priorities as the project progresses. For example, if new requirements or priorities emerge, the agency can re-estimate the work and adjust the project plan accordingly.

  3. Increased transparency: By using story points to track progress and measure performance, an agency can provide clients with more transparent and accurate updates on the status of a project. This can help clients to better understand the progress of the project and assess their development priorities.

  4. Improved decision-making: By using story points to estimate the relative size and complexity of work items, an agency can provide clients with the information they need to make more informed decisions about their development priorities. This can help clients to allocate their resources more effectively and make more informed decisions about the direction of the project.

By using story points, teams can more accurately estimate the amount of work that can be completed within a given time frame and track progress towards goals. This can help to improve the accuracy and reliability of project estimates and facilitate better communication and collaboration between team members.
